How to set up for successful canter half passes

  1. Changes of rhythm in warm-up: Make sure that you have access to all of the gears within your horse's canter. Be sure to refresh the canter when needed.

  2. Preparation is key: Ride deep into your corners and start in shoulder-fore. This enables you to come to the line of travel with shoulders leading vs. haunches.

  3. Keep your outside rein: Starting the half pass with your outside rein and keeping that connection is critical to maintaining the power and flow of the half pass so be sure not to give it away.

How to train clean flying changes with a young horse

  1. Quality canter: Develop a quality, balanced canter and keep your horse’s hind end very active.

  2. Don’t overthink it: Think of the flying change as just one more step of the canter - a transition to the new canter.

  3. Stay straight: Stay straight and keep your legs, seat, and half halt. A common mistake riders make is to stop riding right before (and after) they ask for the flying change. Your young horse needs your support to execute it properly and continue with a quality canter after the change.
